IE lab members visit the GSLIS Usability Lab

IE lab members Borchuluun Yadamsuren and Ben Richardson will be visiting the GSLIS Usability Lab at Simmons College this week. They will learn about eye tracking software and mobile usability methods. This meeting is part of an ongoing IE Lab effort to establish collaborative networks to learn about usability tools and methodologies from other institutions of higher learning that have user experience/HCI labs.

The IE Lab member, Kenneth Haggerty, will be presenting on “Arab International Students’ Perceptions of the Academic Library” in Rome Italy June 4-7, 2013. The presentation will look at the past experiences of Arab International Students concerning library and information studies and how their opinions of libraries have changed since moving to the United States.

Two IE lab members won the ASIST Student Design Competition

Two members of the IE Lab, Dinara Sparaova and Ben Richardson, were members on the winning team for the ASIST Student Design Competition. This contest allows students to develop and present plans for a creative and innovative design in response to a design challenge. The challenge for this year consisted of devising a system to help people evaluate the veracity of reviews. Other members of the winning team included Andy Steinitz and Matt Miller from Pratt Institute and Emma Zhang from the University of South Carolina. Each member of the winning team won registration for next year’s conference in Montreal.

This event provides a forum for showcasing the research of University of Missouri undergraduate and graduate students, residents and fellows in medicine, nursing and health professions.

Usability training for Strategy Tools project

IE Lab team members Dr. Borchuluun Yadamsuren and Josipa Basic organized two-day usability workshop for the team members of Strategy Tools, Kids Tools and VRCbd project on September 13-14th, 2012. Dr. Katherine Mitchem and her research assistant Kelley Martin from California University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Cathy Thomas, assistant professor at the Department of Special Education at the University of Missouri, attended the workshop. Dr. Mitchem and her team collaborated with Dr. Fitzgerald on Strategy Tools, Kids Tools and VRCbd project, which are aimed towards the development of software tools to support children with disabilities in schools. The workshop was tailored to the needs of the participants and focused on the use of Morae 3.3 in data collection and analysis for usability testing of the information system on handheld devices. Workshop participants learned how to conduct a usability study using Think Aloud method. “We found the usability training very informative, interesting, and helpful” Dr. Mitchem said. “I particularly appreciated demonstrations of each part of the process and the opportunities to practice.”

IE lab member received the Phi Delta Kappa graduate scholarship for the current academic year (2012-2013)

Dinara Saparova is a University of Missouri College of Education recipient of the Phi Delta Kappa Graduate Scholarship for the current academic year (2012-2013). This fund was established in 1983 from the donation of the Gamma Chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa to support graduate students enrolled in the College of Education, with preference given to members of Phi Delta Kappa. Phi Delta Kappa is an education honor society established in 1908-1909 at the University of Missouri.

New graduate research assistants joined the IE lab

In fall 2012, two new graduate research assistants, Kenneth Haggerty and Kristen Schuster, joined the IE lab. Both are doctoral students in the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies at MU.
